Chapter 12

Cassie woke up to the sound of Jake opening the door. He grinned at her as he balanced two plates in his hands and kicked the door closed behind him with his foot. She couldn't help but find that lopsided smile adorable.

"I brought you some vittles," he said in a fake cowboy drawl, and she burst out in laughter.

"Sexy cowboys don't sound like that."

He raised an eyebrow at that. "Oh yeah? What do sexy cowboys sound like?" When she didn't answer, he set the plates down and climbed on top of her while she giggled and tried to get away. "How about — I'm going to ride you all night long, little filly?"

Cassie was laughing so hard now that tears were running down her face. "Oh please, anything but that."

Jake's thumbs wiped away the tears and he laid a soft kiss on her lips. "How about I say, let's have some dinner and then we can enjoy ourselves some more."

This sweet and funny side of Jake mixed with the sexy was almost enough to do Cassie in. She threw her arms around his neck and pulled him in for another kiss, enjoying the weight of him on her.

"I'd say that sounds like my sexy cowboy."

He wasn't hers, she knew. But maybe she could pretend he was for a few days. For all her trying not to get emotionally involved with Jake, it was too late. She liked him, a lot.

While they enjoyed their light dinner, sitting with their legs crossed on the bed, Jake told her a hilarious story about how one of the ranch's bulls got out of its pen when he was a teen and his grandfather had given him the job of tracking it down.

"I spent the entire day on the ranch, trying to approach it, only for it to run from me. Finally, I lost it and had to come home empty-handed."

He shared that when he got there, the bull was waiting for him in its pen already. Pops said some animals just naturally came home on their own after exploring, and some stayed further away the more you chased them.

"I couldn't help but wonder if he was talking about my dad," Jake said.

Cassie reached out and squeezed his hand, wishing more than anything she could fix that relationship for him. "My parents are trying to chase me too, but I'm letting them catch me, I guess," she said glumly.

The more time she spent away from Chicago, however, the better she felt about telling them that she didn't want to become a lawyer.

"But maybe I'm thinking about running away from their plans. Just a little."

Jake grinned at her words and pulled Cassie into his arms. "Atta girl. You are worth so much more than the plans they have for you." Cassie stayed in Jake's arms for a while, enjoying the feeling of just being there with him. "Let's take a shower. The sweat of walking around in Jerome so much today is finally catching up with me.
